How to Pick a Paint Finish
Matt, soft sheen or gloss? How to choose the right finish for each room and surface.

Match the finish to the room
Busy and damp areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and hallways do better with a soft sheen or gloss finish, which wipes clean easily. Bedrooms and living rooms suit a softer matt finish.
Consider the condition of the wall
Matt finishes hide small wall imperfections better than gloss. Gloss reflects light and can make bumps and patch marks easier to see.
Think about durability
Gloss and enamel finishes are the most washable and durable, which is why they are the usual choice for doors, trim and skirting boards rather than large wall areas.
Test before you commit
Paint a small sample patch and look at it at different times of day. A finish and colour can look quite different in daylight than under indoor lighting.
Tip: Look at the sample both in the morning and in the evening before you decide.
