How to Paint an Exterior Wall
Prepare and paint an outside wall so the finish holds up to sun, rain and dust.

Check the weather first
Pick a dry spell with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours after your final coat. Avoid painting in direct, peak-heat sun, where the paint can dry too fast to level out properly.
Clean the wall thoroughly
Remove dust, loose flaking paint, mould and algae with a stiff brush or a pressure wash, then let the wall dry completely before doing anything else.
Repair cracks and gaps
Fill cracks and gaps with exterior-grade putty, let it cure fully, then sand smooth so the surface is even.
Apply exterior primer
Roll or brush on a coat of exterior wall primer or sealer, paying extra attention to porous or bare patches. Let it dry fully before the topcoat.
Cut in and roll the topcoat
Cut in the edges, corners and trim lines with a brush first, then roll the main wall area in manageable sections, working from top to bottom.
Tip: Work in the shade where you can, moving around the building with the sun.
Apply a second coat and inspect
Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat for even, weather-resistant coverage. Check the wall in daylight and touch up any thin patches once fully cured.
